Going into the 2022 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Tigers roster.
Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.
We now take a look at one of the most anticipated players on the Tigers team in 2022, sophomore defensive back Sage Ryan. A five-star recruit in 2021, Ryan had a minimal impact in his first season in Baton Rouge, appearing in just four games. However, the former top-30 player could be poised for a breakout season.

Class of 2021: Freshmen
Depth Chart Overview
Ryan was the second-highest-rated recruit in LSU’s 2021 recruiting class coming out of high school, but he had a minimal impact as a true freshman. In the four games he appeared in, he totaled just six tackles and two pass deflections.
A versatile player who can handle safety or nickel responsibilities, Ryan saw most of his action last season in the latter role and will likely do so once again this year. The Tigers have done a lot to address the secondary this offseason, however.
It added four new likely starters, including a three-year starter at nickel in Greg Brooks Jr., who comes in from Arkansas. Brooks didn’t transfer to be a backup, and it will likely take a very strong spring and subsequent fall from Ryan to potentially take that job. Still, Ryan’s a talented player who should figure into the rotation more than he did in 2021.
